NONG SILA

NONG SILA (Many Grandparents, Many Children):
A Community-Based Model for Urban Aboriginal Adoptions

Have you been involved in the foster care or adoption system? Are you an Aboriginal youth, parent, grandparent or service provider? Would you like to share your experiences?

• Are you an Aboriginal youth (14-18) who has been in the foster care system or who has been adopted?
• Are you an Aboriginal parent or grandparent who is currently fostering or has adopted an Aboriginal child? Have you had a child placed in foster care or had a child adopted?
• Are you an Aboriginal service provider currently working in the field of Aboriginal foster care and/or adoptions?

If this description represents you, we would like to invite you to participate in NONG SILA, a research study on off-reserve urban Aboriginal adoptions. This project is a partnership between Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services (SCCFS) and Dr. Sandrina De Finney (Maleseet First Nations), School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria.

The NONG SILA consultations will help us develop a culturally-relevant adoption strategy for off-reserve Aboriginal families in Victoria. This research is very important because there is a lack of knowledge about the specific experiences of Aboriginal youth, parents, grandparents and service providers in the foster care and adoptions system.

Participants will be asked to share their experiences about the foster care and adoptions system in Victoria in a 3 hour focus group at Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services. Transportation can be arranged and an honorarium will be provided to participants. Please contact us to participate or for more information. We really look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you,
