Cultural Programs
Cultural Programs at Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services:
Our Vision: “Our vision is of healthy children who will grow up feeling connected to their families, communities and culture. We will work together toward the day all children and families have the skills, knowledge, education and support to ensure their children and their children’s children will not enter the child welfare or justice systems”.
Surrounded by Cedar employs a fulltime Aboriginal Cultural Programs Coordinator who is responsible for providing cultural programs for urban Aboriginal and off-reserve children, with an emphasis on children-in-care, their caregivers, relevant family and community members.
The CPC works hand in hand with SCCFS team members and other child and youth friendly agencies to give our children and youth the very best opportunities to develop their potential and embrace their culture.
The Cultural Programmer:
Plans, advertises implements, provides and evaluates culturally appropriate programming to urban Aboriginal children and children-in-care during all School District #61 Professional Development Days, Spring Break and during the summer months.
Plans, organizes, and implements an inclusive “Welcoming Ceremony” for each cohort of urban Aboriginal children in care transferred from Government care to SCCFS.
Manages the CPC project including programming, volunteers, budget, report preparation, monitoring and evaluation
Liaises with urban and reserve First Nations, Aboriginal communities, government representatives, natural and extended family, customary care home parents and Advisory Council members, and facilitates cultural training for SCCFS team members as required.
The Cultural Programmer will promote Aboriginal awareness and pride in the South Vancouver Island Region through the following:
- Offers programming as group activities for approximately 20 children per event/day and delivered whenever children are not in school i.e. Professional Development days (10 days) for School District #61 (Victoria), Spring Break (5 days) and 2-3 activities during the summer.
- Helps plan and deliver Cultural Camps during these days for Aboriginal Children in Care, and information is continuously sent out regarding locations and cultural content.
We are always open to new ideas, resources, and resource materials. Drop us a line if you would like to send us any suggestions regarding our Pro D Cultural Camps! Why? Well, we believe in lifelong learning, innovation, fostering a sense of strong identity in our children and youth while having fun while practicing enthusiasm!
