ANA Coalition

On April 8, 2004, over 100 people attended a Victoria community meeting hosted by Surrounded by Cedar Child and Family Services and held at the Boys and Girls Club. The purpose of the meeting was to identify capacity building barriers faced by Surrounded by Cedar and to ask for community guidance in the development of plans to address the barriers. Currently Surrounded by Cedar is currently in development to provide delegated and non delegated child welfare services to urban Aboriginal children and families living in the South Vancouver Island region.

The community members offered a number of suggestions and options. The First Nations Students Association of Camosun College offered to host a second meeting which occurred at Camosun College on April 22, 2004. The Students provided the entire funding for the community meeting which included speakers, lunch, drummers and singers and advertising. The purpose of the second meeting was to share information, raise community awareness and address the need for the development of a local urban Aboriginal community political body. Another community agency put forward an idea to hold a rally to the legislature to further raise community awareness and bring the matter to the attention of the Provincial Government.
